Week 4: Student Teaching Day

Right, you know the drill! It's been a busy week, I'm rather tired, etcetera, etcetera. But, y'know, here are stories about students, pictures of food, pictures of craziness...anyway, I think last week was the worse, since I'm a Committee Head and my event was Student Teaching Day, which was on Friday. So...yeah. No sleep. Oops. Anyway, this week is much more chill (for me), so check out my fun pictures! Yay!

Oh look! So...ST Day (Not STD, ST Day) is about empowering the students to teach. I mean, when they first start Summerbridge as new students, a lot of them have difficulty even speaking up in class, let alone teaching a group of 15 students and teachers! But hey, it's the third week of SB, and these students have truly bloomed - to hear some of them now, you wouldn't be able to believe that they were mute at the very beginning! (Ie. Michael - I'd swear that he was louder than most of the returning students!) Anyway, Team Spelling Bee was in charge of this event, and we were pretty busy with the whole affair. Since every student teaches, and when they're not teaching, they have to be attending classes...yeah. You could probably guess that there are lots of logistics involved.

But more about that later! Anyway, in order for the students to be able to teach, we had to prepare them a bit. ^_^ So, on Monday, we held a workshop! Part of the workshop was the Robot Game, which was supposed to teach detailed instructions (the person playing the robot must deliberately misunderstand the intent of each instruction, while following directions to the exact letter). Above is Tiffany, being the robot for our CDC. They had a good time with this, and since the students had great classes, I assume they learned something from the workshop, which someone else on the committee designed. :P

So, uh, when we read a chapter about Point of View, we played a game about Point of View. For some reason, I found myself putting a lot of improv into my storytelling games. The thing is, 1A is superbly good at writing scripts, so I wanted to give them a challenge! This is a split-screen one, where each person tells part of the story, but everyone's got their own take on a story, right? Meet Peter and Devily, attempting to tell the story of Little Red. (Here, they leave out the Riding Hood bit of the story, I guess). Peter's really confused because he's the wolf and he doesn't remember how the story goes, and Devily's trying to help him out, even while staying in character.

Look, sushi! Every once in awhile, Evelyn and I get all these cravings for sushi, and eventually, we give into those cravings... :P Sushi One is my favorite sushi place around here (mhmmm... salmon and scallops!), and it's probably equivalent to any decent mid-level sushi place in the States, for just a fraction of the price! I mean, it's still pricier than most food around here! Anyway, this was on, what, Wednesday?

Guess what! You see the dim sum in the bottom? THOSE ARE CUPCAKES. We walked into a mall - Harbour City - and there was a CUPCAKE ART EXHIBITION. And those cupcakes were real. Like, you could buy cupcakes. ^_^ And that cupcake mosaic? THOSE ARE ALL MINI CUPCAKES. :D

I know. You're salivating, right?

So, each family has to have a secret pal (like Secret Santa) family, right? Rita, in my family, randomly came up with homophones, which is something I taught her like, the week before. I think that was one of my proudest moments. Anyway, we couldn't come up with enough homophones for "C," so we went with rhymes. :) But my family's awesome!

Dear Family C,
   Do you see the tree?
I want you to see -
   It's your family tree!
   Do you love me?
You need to keep a key -
So you can see the sea that is Family C!

:D :D :D :D Yeah Family D! Dangerous Dragon Dumplings!

So, I made the students do this Characterization Improv exercise, which basically involved me calling out an emotion, a student acting that out as she/he tried to buy a notebook, and the other student imitating the first student. It was amazing. Actually, the students just took off with this, calling out funky things like "handsome" (for Peter, who is such a gentleman), or "starstruck for Mr. Right." They were really, really, jaw-droppingly good. This is Devily and Yoyo, being super sad. :P

So, the actual Student Teaching Day! To be honest, I didn't see all that much, since I was mad busy, running around and taking care of things. But from what I heard from the students, they had a blast, which makes me really happy, since I was basically sleep-deprived the entire week so that I could do logistical things. Dude. I hate running things. I should never be put in charge of things. :P

Left: Miki's K-Pop class. Doris is just rocking out.
Right: Edmond and Luka, trying to teach International Chess (regular chess). Poor Edmond! He couldn't pronounce "bishop" or "diagonally," but his class was pretty good!

Left: Doris teaching Italian, which was what she learned in her elective class last year.
Right: Myles, one of our staff members, learning how to fold paper!

Left: Sunny and Jason, teaching Big 2. Soooo cute!
Right: Jack and Peter, and their drawing class! Their lesson plan was ADORABLE.
Step 1: Ask students to draw a nose.
Step 2: Show them our noses. (Jack's nose)
Step 3: Show them how to make their noses better.
Step 4: Draw noses again.

(But, like, why noses?)

Okay, this was like, one of my favorite Student Taught classes. Bobby and Heidi wanted to teach Chinese Chess, but since we have English Immersion, they had to cover up the characters, so they sat down and made little English translation signs for every. single. chess piece. So, like, elephant. And knight. And guards and things (I don't know how you play). But this was just like...adorable! I love our students. :)

Banana eating competition! We thought Edmond would win, but Sunny proved to be the victor. 4 Bananas in 5 minutes - who could do it?

Ugh I hate bananas.

Talent Show! (STDay was a busy busy day) Leo, Michael, and Jack performed. They rocked it.

Delicious dumplings and chicken soup! Yay for cheap food!

The rando that sat near us. Lolz.
